Birchwood Beach,
2000 House Tour

In the 1870s Birchwood Beach, the area along Lake Michigan, north of Touhy, had no paved streets and was just a sandbank filled with birch and oak trees.

Since it had not been drained, rising and falling Lake Michigan waters usually affected the area. Yet it was an attractive district and when Sheridan Road was laid out and people began seeing it as a route along the Lake between Chicago and the towns further north. A movement began to develop the area.
